Atomic Habits Book Cover
"The power of change visualized through Lichtenburg marks"
Detailed Description
As a reader of this book before the brief, I was ecstatic to create this entree to the Penguin Book Cover Competition for the Non-Fiction Book: Atomic Habits. This is a book about building and breaking any habit one step at a time. This visual identity takes inspiration from Lichtenburg marks created. This atomic change is the heart of this book cover and visual identity.

Design a book cover and branding for the non-fiction book Atomic Habits for Penguin Books
Key Insight
While researching atomic change, Lichtenburg marks (burning wood with high voltage electricity) look very similar to patterns found in both humans and plants.
By collaging and transforming these marks, blurring lines between humans and nature, I could tell a story of change to show the power of an atomic habit.
More Insight Details
Atomic Habits is a book for everybody, because anybody can form and break any habit.
Atomic Habits is about real change.
The book Atomic Habits is applicable to everything. Everything! The word is freeing and overwhelming. How do I show the power of an atomic habit? My answer was: Lichtenburg marks.
In every bit of design work I take on, I try to push the boundaries of my craft, and I was inspired to create a laser- engraved book cover inspired by Lichtenburg marks. This chemical reaction was the perfect way to display the power of an atomic habit.
The Identity
Learning a new craft was crucial to spreading message of this book cover and branding.
This visual can be applied to different things, much like the actual book. It can be interpreted as neurons activating, like how a habit is formed.
It can look like the roots of a plant growing, to nurture a new life.
It can be a chemical reaction, on wood and in the brain.
Laser engraving made this the execution of this concept possible, and I’ve grown a much stronger appreciation for it. I’m very proud of this outcome and I’d like to do more bookcover designs in the future.
